The Following is an excerpt from Dog Owners Speak Out on Knees:
Neaka - Traditional
Surgery for Torn ACL
Symptoms:
Neaka had been limping on occasion. Usually after she rested, then some
stretching on her part, she seemed to walk normally. After watching her
closely for a couple of weeks, I took her to the vet……I thought it was
her hip.
Treatment Option
selected and Why
We opted for the traditional repair – Fascia Lata Graft.
(Intracapsular) Surgery
Neaka’s surgery was performed by our regular vet. She came home the
same day as her surgery. She was on pain killers and antibiotics. Her
entire leg was in a cast. The next day, she was able to move around
really well.
We leash walked her to go potty for 4 days. Then we started to leave
her off leash to go, as she was more comfortable doing that. I always
stayed with her and she would come right back inside. We always used a
sling when we did stairs. She insisted on coming upstairs, so we either
carried her or used a sling to help her. She was very careful.
We did not modify our living arrangements during her recovery. We have
another dog who is very old and not very active. We normally baby gated
them into the kitchen during the day and continued to do so.
Seven weeks post op, we had a big OOPS. She must have slipped through
the door without us knowing at night. We searched for her for 2 hours,
to no avail. Four hours later, she came home on her own. She was
completely lame on the leg. We took her to the vet and the ACL repair
was still intact. We were given pain meds and antibiotics again, and
she was to have complete rest. So, we started crating her.
She seemed to recover after a couple of days, but as weeks went by, it
seemed like her leg was shifting outward. We visited the vet again, and
she had stretched her Lateral Collateral Ligament in that leg. So, she
had another surgery to tighten it.
Finally, three months later, she was back to her normal self again.
Recovery time altogether was 6 months for her to return to normal.
Current Age of Dog: 9 years old (2009)
If faced with the
same choice today, would you make the same decision?
Yes, I would make the same choice today, and already have. Neaka tore
her other ACL 10 months later. We did the same surgery on that leg. It
has been 3 months since that surgery, and she is doing great.
2009 Update:
Neaka is doing fantastic. Every year, when the weather changed here in
PA, she would appear sore. However, since I’m home with her full time
and she is getting much more exercise, she has not had a problem or any
soreness.

Treatments
for Torn ACL or CCL Ligaments
If you and your dog are facing
surgery for a torn ligament or luxating patella, this is an
absolute must read. Twenty eight dog owners share their story
with you!
Excerpts from the book...
Even though he was on
sedatives, I don't think any of us slept much that night.
It was very
stressful. My biggest fear was that he was so energetic that he
would get out of hand and hurt his leg before the surgery was
completely healed........
......I finally saw a
glimpse of the dog that I had sent to the vet's four days earlier.
The morning
after she came home, I did not like the looks of her leg.......
Unfortunately, she hasn't read the post op
literature................
